Approaching online dating requires some strategizing so singles can meet the kind of people they want to date. Joining a big website such as Match.com or YahooPersonals.com brings in the numbers, but requires a lot of sorting and screening to find someone who shares some of your interests. That's why I usually suggest that singles also join a smaller, "specialty" website in order to meet other singles who share at least one of your major interests. I've frequently recommended a couple of specialty websites that I know have the kind of people they advertise as having on the site -- JDate.com for Jewish singles and RightStuffDating.com for Ivy League graduates (usually "intellectually-oriented" types), for example. I hope to infiltrate eHarmony.com some time soon, and had previously posted about Fitness-Singles.com, but haven't heard anything else about them. I recently learned about a couple of other specialty dating websites that, as demonstrated by their URL's, promise to represent singles with very specific interests. MustLovePets.com is "the premiere pet finder destination for meeting and/or dating quality animal lovers who are single and seeking a sincere relationship with other dog lovers or cat lovers." WineLoversMeet.com is "designed specifically for people who enjoy wine. You don't have to be a wine connoisseur to become a member. . .just as long as you have some general enthusiasm for the great taste of wine."

While neither seem to require that you have a pet or love wine, they are providing opportunities to meet other singles who have a strong identification and a strong personal preference for a specific hobby or interest. While it's true that you can meet others while doing what you love to do, such as biking, hiking, and traveling as well as playing with your pets or drinking wine, I think singles might be more successful meeting others of the same ilk in their neighborhoods by checking out activities on MeetUp.com. For example, after you plug in your zip code, you can pick from a variety of topics, then find a meeting or activity that interests you. I'd love to hear from anyone who has joined either of these websites, so I'll know whether or not to recommend them to others in the future.
